Tamil Nadu jewellers halt gold sales amid import restrictions

In response to growing concerns over gold imports, Tamil Nadu's jewelers have launched a boycott of gold coin sales. The association is calling for an immediate ban on exchange-traded funds (ETFs), digital gold sales, and restrictions on gold importers, bullion dealers, channelling agents, and bullion brokers. Meanwhile, a Udupi MLA argues that the move to withdraw the ban on hijab in schools is merely an attempt to Islamize the education system.

The decision comes as Tiruppur garment exporters and manufacturers are demanding the removal of import duties on cotton to boost their operations. The special enrollment drive for government primary schools set to commence this year will offer a bilingual medium of education, aiming to improve quality and inclusivity in the region.

Meanwhile, a recent incident involving a policeman being arrested for forcing a woman to abort her pregnancy has sparked controversy and debate over the treatment of women's reproductive rights in the state.
