Oak Trees Delay Leaf‑Out to Starve Caterpillars, Cutting Damage by Half

A new study reports that oak trees can postpone spring leaf growth by about three days after a heavy caterpillar attack the previous year. This brief delay deprives newly hatched caterpillars of food, slashing insect survival and reducing leaf damage by more than 50%, an effective defense beyond chemical tactics.
