Hyderabad Ranks Third in India for Road Fatalities, NCRB Data Shows 28.6% Accident Rise in 2024

According to the National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) 2024 report released on May 10, 2026, Hyderabad recorded a 28.6% increase in road accidents, positioning it as the third most accident‑prone city in India after Delhi and Bengaluru.

The alarming surge in traffic casualties has placed Hyderabad alongside the nation’s most dangerous urban corridors, prompting public safety officials to call for urgent road‑safety interventions. Telangana’s transport department reported nearly 8,000 road deaths in the state for 2024, a figure that mirrors the city’s rising vehicular congestion and inadequate infrastructure upgrades.

The Hindu highlighted that “Hyderabad recorded a 28.6% rise in number accidents in 2024, behind only Delhi and Bengaluru.” Transport Minister K.T. Ravindra cited, “We must accelerate the implementation of intelligent traffic management systems and stricter enforcement of helmet and seat‑belt laws.” However, opposition leader Shri Sanjay Reddy countered, stating, “The government’s half‑measures have failed; comprehensive urban planning is the only solution.”

Road‑safety expert Dr. Anjali Deshmukh emphasized that the spike aligns with increased two‑wheelers on city roads and insufficient pedestrian pathways. “Without segregated lanes and robust emergency response mechanisms, any city’s fatality rate will climb,” she warned. Urban planner Vikram Patel added that “Smart‑city initiatives can leverage data analytics to predict high‑risk zones and deploy targeted interventions.”

The state government plans to launch a multi‑phase road‑safety campaign in the coming months, including the rollout of speed‑monitoring cameras and an awareness drive in schools. The effectiveness of these measures will be monitored ahead of the NCRB’s 2025 publication, which will reveal whether the trend reverses.
