UK Interior Minister urges Prime Minister Starmer to consider stepping down

On May 11, 2026, Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood joined at least two other cabinet colleagues in publicly suggesting that Prime Minister Keir Starmer should contemplate his position amid mounting political pressure. The remarks were made during a parliamentary committee meeting on national security.

Starmer has been under scrutiny since the 2024 general election, where his party secured a narrow majority but faced criticism over handling of immigration and public safety. Recent scandals involving senior ministers have intensified calls for fresh leadership within the Labour government.

The Hindu reports that Mahmood said, "The nation deserves decisive leadership, and we must consider the best path forward," while BBC quoted Home Secretary James O'Connor as echoing similar concerns. Reuters, however, noted that Starmer's office dismissed the comments as "politically motivated" and insisted the Prime Minister remains committed to his mandate.

Constitutional scholars at King's College warn that public calls for resignation from a cabinet member could destabilise the governing coalition and set a precedent for internal challenges. Opposition leaders have called for a confidence vote, while some Labour backbenchers argue for a leadership contest.

The situation will likely be tested at the upcoming Labour Party conference on June 3, where Starmer is expected to address the rumors directly, and a possible internal vote could be scheduled if pressure escalates.
