Telangana government pledges comprehensive safety measures for women online and offline

The Telangana state cabinet, on May 11, 2026, unveiled a multi‑pronged strategy aimed at bolstering women's safety across both physical spaces and digital platforms. The plan, titled "The Road to Deliver Women's Safety," includes increased policing, a dedicated cyber‑crime cell, and a statewide helpline.

The initiative comes after a spike in gender‑based crimes reported in Hyderabad and other districts during the first quarter of 2026, prompting public outcry and demands for stronger protective mechanisms. The state has also faced criticism for slow response to online harassment cases.

Chief Minister K. Chandra Babu Naidu, speaking to The Hindu, emphasized, "Safety is a fundamental right; our policies must adapt to the evolving threats women face." The cyber‑cell, led by IPS officer R. Shyam, will coordinate with national agencies to track and prosecute offenders. The plan also proposes mandatory safety audits for public venues and schools.

Gender‑rights NGOs, such as Sahyog, welcomed the framework but urged the government to ensure rigorous implementation and periodic impact assessments. Legal scholar Dr. Meena Rao from Osmania University noted that combining offline policing with digital monitoring could set a benchmark for other Indian states.

The rollout will begin with pilot projects in five districts by September 2026, followed by a statewide review in March 2027 to measure effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.
