Tamil Nadu AIADMK faction led by C.Ve. Shanmugam pledges support to TTV Dhinakaran ahead of Assembly floor test

A split within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) intensified on May 12 as the faction headed by former ministers C.Ve. Shanmugam and K. Velumani announced its backing for T.T.V. Dhinakaran (TVK), the leader of the breakaway Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK). The declaration came just hours before the state government’s scheduled floor test to confirm Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s majority in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

The intra‑party rift emerged after the 2024 state elections, when AIADMK’s traditional allies fractured and former chief minister O. Panneerselvan’s supporters shifted loyalties. Analysts say the move could tip the balance of power in a closely contested Assembly, where the ruling DMK‑led alliance holds a slim margin and opposition parties are scrambling for numbers.

The Hindu’s live feed reported that Shanmugam’s faction claimed the alliance with TVK was “strategic, not ideological,” adding that they had previously been denied a role in the pre‑poll coalition. In a televised interview, Shanmugam said, “We are no longer in any pre‑poll alliance; our priority is to ensure a stable government that respects Tamil Nadu’s development agenda.” Velumani echoed the sentiment, noting that former chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) had attempted to retain the chief ministerial post with DMK backing, a claim that has been contested by DMK officials.

Political scientists warn that the endorsement could fragment the opposition vote, potentially benefiting the ruling DMK by weakening AIADMK’s negotiating clout. “When splinter groups coalesce around a marginal leader like TVK, it often leads to vote‑splitting that hurts the broader opposition,” said Dr. Meenakshi Raghavan of Madras University. The move also raises questions about the future of AIADMK’s unity, with senior party figure J. Jayalalithaa’s legacy potentially at risk.

Observers will watch the upcoming floor test scheduled for later this week, as well as any subsequent coalition talks among opposition parties. If TVK’s AMMK can secure enough MLAs to influence the vote, the state could see a reshuffling of ministries or even a fresh election call. The political calculus will likely intensify ahead of the June 20 deadline for a confidence motion, making the AIADMK split a pivotal factor in Tamil Nadu’s near‑future governance.
