Social Media Use Linked More to Stress Relief and Belonging Than Habit

A new study published in the International Journal of Electronic Marketing and Retailing finds that people turn to social platforms primarily to satisfy psychological needs for stress alleviation and social connection. This challenges the dominant view that usage is driven mainly by habit or addiction‑like mechanisms. The findings could inform platform design, policy and user‑education efforts.
