Record High in Internal Displacements Caused by Conflict or Violence

The number of internal displacements triggered by conflict or violence around the world reached a record high in 2025, surpassing the number of disaster-driven internal displacements for the first time. According to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), by the end of 2025 there were 32.3 million people displaced internally due to conflict or violence.

This marks a significant shift in the causes of internal displacement, with disasters having previously been the primary driver of such movements. The IDMC report highlights that 82.2 million people were displaced around the world in total, making it one of the most severe humanitarian crises in recent history.

Experts point out that this trend is deeply concerning and underscores the need for sustained efforts to address the root causes of conflict and violence.

Looking ahead, the IDMC report notes that ongoing conflicts in various parts of the world are expected to continue driving internal displacement, with key flashpoints including the Middle East and Africa. The international community will be watching closely to see how governments respond to these challenges.
