Nasscom says Indian tech firms stick to hybrid work after PM’s remote‑work appeal
The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) issued a statement on May 11 confirming that Indian technology firms continue to operate under well‑established hybrid work models, despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call for greater work‑from‑home (WFH) adoption. The trade body highlighted that companies have also implemented energy‑saving measures in response to ongoing tensions in West Asia.
The PM’s appeal, made during his weekly radio address, urged firms to “embrace flexible working to reduce commuter congestion and boost productivity.” This follows a series of government initiatives aimed at modernising workplace practices, dating back to the 2020 pandemic‑era lockdowns that forced many firms to shift online.
Nasscom’s press release, cited by The Hindu, quoted its Chairman, Mr. S. Ganapathy, saying, “Most of our members already follow a hybrid model that balances office presence with remote work, and they have fine‑tuned energy consumption across campuses due to the current West Asian geopolitical climate.” The statement added that the sector’s overall carbon footprint has dropped by 12% since 2022. Reuters, consulted separately, reported that several large firms plan to increase remote days from two to three per week, while Bloomberg noted that some startups are experimenting with fully remote setups.
Industry analysts view the stance as pragmatic. “Indian IT firms see hybrid work as a competitive advantage rather than a policy compliance issue,” said Priya Nair, senior analyst at IDC India. “The added energy‑saving steps are a direct response to higher electricity costs stemming from supply disruptions linked to the Middle‑East conflict.”
Future monitoring will focus on any legislative measures the government may introduce to formalise remote‑work guidelines. The Ministry of Labour is expected to present a draft framework in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, and companies will likely report on further energy‑efficiency initiatives in their sustainability disclosures later this year.
