CBI Probe Lauded as West Bengal’s Suvendu Adhikari Aide Murder Case Stirs Allegations of Framing

The murder of a close aide to West Bengal politician Suvendu Adhikari has entered a critical phase after the CBI took over the investigation on May 11, 2026. Raj Singh, accused of the killing, is being represented by advocate Harivansh Singh, who praised the central agency’s thoroughness while alleging procedural lapses by the state police.

The case revives concerns over political violence in West Bengal, a state where fierce rivalries between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP have frequently spilled into criminal allegations. The murder of the aide, who was a key strategist for Adhikari's 2021 campaign, intensified calls for an impartial probe, prompting the central government to intervene.

According to The Hindu, Harivansh Singh said, “The CBI’s involvement assures a fair inquiry, unlike the West Bengal Police, which failed to follow due process during Raj Singh’s arrest.” The accused’s mother, Sita Singh, told reporters that her son was “framed” and that the police had “pressured” him to confess. Meanwhile, a CBI spokesperson declined to comment on the investigation’s specifics, citing case confidentiality.

Legal analyst Anup Ghosh noted that the shift to a central agency could limit any perceived bias from the state administration, but warned that political pressure may still influence proceedings. “If the CBI presents a transparent case, it could restore some public confidence, but the underlying political tussle between the BJP and Trinamool will continue to shape narratives,” he said. Former police officer and security expert Radhika Sharma added that procedural irregularities, if proven, could lead to the suppression of evidence and affect the admissibility of statements.

The next steps include the filing of a charge sheet, anticipated in the next two weeks, and a scheduled hearing before the Calcutta High Court in early June. Observers will monitor whether the CBI’s findings lead to a conviction or if the case will be dismissed on procedural grounds, a development that could have broader repercussions for political accountability in the state.
